Christ the King Parish serves the areas of Queenswood and surroundings in the City of Tshwane (Pretoria) in Gauteng Province in South Africa.

The Parish is a Parish of the Catholic Archdiocese of Pretoria

Our community is broad and diverse - from residents who were founder members of the Parish in the 1960s, to members of the Diplomatic community, to students at the nearby University of Tshwane (TUKS) and The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

Celebrate

Our aim is to be a Catholic community that celebrates our Personhood in Jesus Christ and welcomes all those who seek to celebrate and serve.

The church is open for Adoration during the following times:
Monday to Saturday 10h00 till 22h00

Catechetical
Programme

The Family is the first teacher of the Faith. Catechists or Catechism teachers only provide support to the efforts of the family. Our Catechetical Programme works under the guidance of Fr. Daniel Kivuw'a and his capable team.

Family
Ministry

Our Families are the living stones (1 Peter 2:5) of our Parish. Family takes many forms. Our Family ministry is under the direction of Geofred Schippers.

History

In 1965 the Archdiocese purchased the property where the Parish currently stands and after extensive renovations and changes to the buildings and grounds, Fr Denis Adami was transferred from Holy Rosary, Waverley, and in 1967 commenced with the task of establishing the Queenswood parish community. Prior to this he had been instrumental in the planning of this new parish which was a dream of his.

An integral part of the church building is the Wall of Light - a 20m long wall of stained glass, designed by artist Leo Theron. The central piece of the work is the altarpiece and the gold-leafed crucifix behind it.

The first marriage recorded in the Parish register was of the Fieldings in April 1967.

Over the years a number of Priests have served this Parish - after the sad passing of Fr Adami in 1985 the parish was blessed to be led by Fr Peter Switala, Fr Robert MacKay, Fr Ralph Milburn, Fr Cyril Schulpen, Fr Johan Strydom, Fr Craigh Laubscher, Fr Chris Townsend, Fr Thabiso Ledwaba and Fr Daniel Kivuw'a IMC is the current parish priest.

In November 2000, a Chapel of Perpetual Adoration was established which is a constant reminder of God's love and has parishioners in attendance 7 days a week: Monday to Saturday 10h00 till 22h00 and Sunday from 08h00 till 20h00.

The Garden of Remembrance planning started in 1991 and in 1992 permission was granted for the establishment of this area behind the church building. A revamp of the area was done in 2006 where an additional wall was built in 2022, in the Garden Of Rememberance, to accommodate more parisheners.

When the space available for Catechism classes became far too limited and in addition a meeting place was needed for the Youth, a decision was made to purchase the ground next to the Priest's house and to form the Denis Adami Centre. The Centre was officially opened as a tribute to Fr Adami and the crucial role he played in the establishment of the Parish. It now also houses an informal coffee bar and the parish Repository.

Over the years the Parish has formed a very robust "band" which lifts the roof on Sunday mornings at the 8am Mass led by gifted musicians. In addition the Youth group has grown from strength to strength also incorporating a soup kitchen in their activities. This adds to the Siyafunda Haven Outreach Programme which collects, packs and supplies food parcels to a vast amount of families. The Catechism Programme now fulfills the spiritual needs of a big group of children from pre-school through to Confirmation.

With a very competent Parish Council and Finance committee running the business side of the Parish and a new and inspiring Priest for the spiritual needs, the Parish will continue to grow in numbers and popularity.
